Hello Everyone,

It was wonderful to hear about the great turnout at the quarterly membership meeting and DDACTS training.  There were 116 law enforcement executives in attendance at the meeting and approximately 50 stayed for the training.  Thank you Dr. Birney for attending and explaining to those in attendance the proposed legislation filed by CLEET and the changes they are undertaking with the POST testing.

Last Tuesday I attended the CLEET Council meeting where each piece of proposed legislation was discussed by the council and after thoughtful discussion on each of these items they were unanimously approved by the Council.  As we look toward the future in law enforcement and what changes need to be made to enhance professionalism throughout the industry, there will be many hard decisions to be made.

During the last few weeks I have listened to several Chief’s concern about our current economic times.  You will be asked to do more with less manpower.  Many departments will have to hold unfilled positions for a later hiring date, layoff officers who have given great service to their department and the communities they serve, and forgo purchases of much needed equipment.

Some of the ways that OACP will continue to serve and support our membership during these tough times is by trying to provide training at no cost or low cost, many of which are being paid for by grant funds.  We continue to seek preferred partnerships with entities that will provide you with tools that will help you to work more efficiently through enhanced technologies, online trainings (great way to get c.e. credits without the travel expense), programs that will reimburse you for putting your accident reports online, death and dismemberment insurance,  and prescreening tools for smart hiring practices.

With that in mind, we are working on the August conference.  As you plan budgets for 2011 remember for only $225 you get 25 hours of CLEET accredited training (meals included), time to network and plan with your colleagues, the chance to honor your officers with the OACP Awards Banquet Program, all while having the latest law enforcement technologies on display for your perusal.

If you will be unable to attend this year, please let us know that as we make plans.  Our budget is tight like yours and we need to know as far in advance as possible how many plan on attending.  If you have suggestions for trainings or speakers that you would like to see at the show, please send me an e-mail or give me a call.  I can feel the excitement in the air as we put together what will be our 34th annual training conference.
Remember, your active participation is needed to guide the direction in which your OACP will be going in 2010!

Take care and stay safe,
S.
